Kirksville Film Circle – call for interest

Written on January 18, 2013 at 1:35 am, by toddkuhns

Efforts are underway to establish a non-profit film society in town to bring in the best of independent and world cinema – and they need your help.

The group is initially experimenting with a three month season, two films a month, for $50 – this covers the cost of working with Emerging Pictures to license the films and the rental of Pickler’s Famous’s Orpheum Theatre.  The group also expects to have some events before films and discussions after.

The group has generated enough interest so far to make this a feasible reality, beginning with the first film on Sat, Feb 16. However, help is needed to set up the non-profit organization, establish a board, pick the films, and all the other necessities.
If you are interested in being a part of this endeavor – either as a subscribing member or a volunteer – they want to hear from you!
  • Send an email message to the current coordinator, Dereck Daschke, to get put on the email list – ddaschke@truman.edu
  • Join the open Facebook group
  • If you would like to serve on the board or share your ideas, come to the Costa Rica Coffee Company on Jan 26 (Fri) at 5pm for an informal meeting.
If you share a love for film and want to make great, challenging, and amazing pictures available in Kirksville, let us know and we’ll make movie magic happen!

Rest In Peace, Old Friend

Written on November 15, 2012 at 6:52 pm, by toddkuhns

I remember the day we bought you.

Mike at the Pear Tree steered us your way. A kind lady sent us photos. Your price – a measly $1,100 – was love at first sight.

You may have been used and refurbished, but to us you were sparkling and new.

It took the sweat and strain of four strong men to wrestle you into the kitchen to your perch on top of that bin. At 1,300 lbs, we had no idea how much ice you would make, but Craig at the Dukum said it was a lot. He said we should buy the biggest machine so we wouldn’t have to work you all the time. You were fragile. You would break a lot. You needed all the rest you could get.

Little did we know how true that would be.

You were water-cooled – a double-plus. Water-cooled, we were told, is more cost-effective and energy efficient. You would not add to the heat of the kitchen. We could even reclaim your pure, circulating water to wash dishes.

We never did.

When you first stopped working, I worried for you. The grizzly doctor came by and hit you with a hammer a few times. Said he replaced a sensor, hoped it would work. It did. For a while.

Since that ominous day, my worry grew. I knew the day would come when you would no longer be with us. Turns out it was right after that Rotary Taste of the World event. You worked so hard. Your final cubes spent, you gave the ultimate sacrifice to charity. You died as you lived.

We’ll always remember the cold refreshment you brought to thousands of guests, young and old. We will miss your odd-shaped cubes. The ice bags from Wal-Mart and Hy-Vee pale in comparison to your output.

Farewell, old friend. Your warranty was taken from us way too soon. We could never replace you. Because it’s not economically viable.
